Lesson 32

Students read their novels while each one sat down with me individually to receive a current mark (this mark does not yet include the test paragraph, or the final poster project for the play we are working on).

A number of students are going to pop in on Thursday/Friday morning to work on improving their "Veldt" writing and get a bump.

We read to the bottom of page 53 in Toronto at Dreamer's Rock - BLOCK 3 was unable to get to that point, and must do so on their own - Charts should be completed for tomorrow.

Lesson 31

Students finished their vocab presentations, and then we began reading the play

HMWRK - do as much of the "Dreamer's Rock" reading chart as is possible - make sure that for any quotes or examples, you include page numbers in brackets (30).

Tomorrow, Ms. Infanta will be presenting to the class, so we will carry on our play work on Monday.

Lesson 30

Today was largely a block to work on vocab for our upcoming play!

Tomorrow we finish presenting the terms - then read the play!

Any students who have missed quizzes etc. are expected to come in for tutorial as soon as they are back at school - waiting to do so could mean that the mark does not make it onto the interim report.

Lesson 29

Students marked their apostrophe quizzes - some did not go as well as might have been hoped - this is a sign to the student that they should do more work with this punctuation so that they can use it in their writing.

Students worked in groups on some vocabulary/concepts to set the groundwork for our play - tomorrow they will present these terms/ideas, and then we will begin the play!

Lesson 28

 Students wrote an apostrophe quiz

Students read their personal novel

We marked the terms section of the short story test together

We briefly looked at vocab for (and brainstormed about) the play to come.

Students should have a comprehensive mark, minus the test paragraph, by the end of the week

Lesson 27

Today was the 3rd, and final, section of the short story unit test - the paragraph piece. All students had the entire block to write.

On Monday there is a short quiz on Apostrophes, and then we will begin our new unit!

Lesson 25/26

Students worked hard on the second section of their test today - the 3rd and final section is tomorrow!

Students will be writing a paragraph on today's story - they have the entire block.

If they finish early, students are encouraged to read their personal novels, but they may also work quietly on materials for other classes.

Lesson 24

 Students read their personal novels

Students did their 3rd and final sheet on apostrophes - Quiz on Monday the 24th

Students studied their terms for tomorrow's test.

I have broken the test into 3 parts, in order to give students the time they need to get all parts done during shortened blocks etc.

  1.  - Tuesday - Terms and plot diagram labelling
  2.  - Wednesday - Read the story and answer multiple choice questions.
  3.  - Thursday - Write a paragraph (connected to the story - question on the day)

Students who zip though the sections will be reading while waiting on their peers :)

Lesson 22/23

Yesterday students read their personal novels, discussed  question 2 from "Penny" and wrote theme statements for the story.

Today students read.

Students did a second sheet on apostrophes.

We discussed question #5 on the last story, then did some review for a test coming up next week.

Students should study the terms and plot diagram in their Short Story Terminology Package - but only need to be able to name a couple of points of view, rather than define them.

Students did a sheet on apostrophes

Students read "Penny in the Dust" as a class - no homework.

Lesson 20

 Students read their personal novels.

We corrected a comma quiz from last week - these are not heavily weighted in terms of marks, but give students a good snapshot of where they are with comma use at the moment.

Students moved into working groups and submitted answers to to the following questions:

  • What are 3 instances of foreshadowing in the opening section of the story - why are they foreshadowing/explain
  • Find a quotation which encapsulates the climax of the story - How do you know that this is the climax?
  • Write a theme statement for the story - centred around what the story reveals about the relationship between humans and nature

Lesson 19

Students did a comma quiz (anyone who missed it should be in the room at 8:30 on Tuesday)

We read "The Sea Devil" together - anyone who missed it should read the text at home.

No homework beyond reading/understanding the story.

Lesson 16

Students worked on their rough drafts today, and will come in at 8:30 tomorrow if they need a bit more time to complete them.

They will do a peer edit, and then head into good copies tomorrow!

Lesson K

Students shared some truly remarkable odes today - I was so proud of the work they did! Students  had the rest of the block to either begin ...
