Lesson 47 & 48

My apologies for not blogging yesterday - the internet was malfunctioning at school.

Today, students read to the end of "Wab's Coming-to Story" - and caught up on their notes.

On Monday students will be handing in their character notes, so it is important they focus on getting them done in detail - with page numbers - and including quotations that illustrate not just physical characteristics of the characters, but character traits as well. Students should indicate which trait a particular quote illustrates.

Lesson 46

Today students received the old "Veldt" paragraphs - in order to take them home for review with report cards (they had seen them before - then handed them back in).

We talked about an Indigenous Miss Wold Canada - and what that means in terms of representation.

We discussed a variety of TikTok's from Indigenous creators.

We talked about this Metis piece - what they noticed and what was missing.

We discussed the consequences of what Fracking is doing to BC - and the impact on Island nations, such as Tuvalu.

We then read up to the top of page 59 in The Marrow Thieves

Notes for the reading are the only homework - those who missed Friday's class should be in at 8:30 tomorrow morning.

Lesson 45

Students worked through a review of "Magic Words," before reading "Haunted in the Bush" together.

They did an in-class write - for which an alternate write will be available to those who missed it on Tuesday morning, during tutorial, next week.

No homework, beyond finishing the chapter we read in class/writing notes for that chapter.

Leson 44

Today students learned about road allowances, and listened to a piece from Jesse Thistle on the history of the Metis people, and his family.

We talked about the terms syncretism and justaposition - and students got a look at the Metis legend of the Rougarou

We talked over the last chapter, then read "Magic Words," which students are to add to their notes from for homework - many finished this in class, and there is no additional work to do.

Lesson 43

Block 3 did some catch up - we discussed the 60's Scoop, the history of assimilation the country is built on via this Trudeau Sr. quote  and we also asked questions about when it is appropriate to teach the young about the darker aspects of humanity.

Both blocks debriefed yesterday's sextortion presentation.

Block 2 read their personal novels.

As a class, we read "Story: Part One" and students should get their notes up to date for that chapter.

There is no further homework.

Lesson 42

Block 3 had a presentation to attend today on sexploitation.

Block 2 read their novels, had long, fruitful discussions, and read to the top of page 27. No additional homework!

Lessons 38/39/40

My apologies for spotty blogging - I will be right back on top of it next week.

Students spent Monday/Tuesday working on "Dreamer's Rock" projects - Wednesday the received their new novel, The Marrow Thieves,  and all classes should now be at the bottom of page 11.

Today, Block 2 went to a Remembrance Day assembly, and BLK3 did silent reading, got a little extra "Veldt" weirdness in (in the form of a 1989 film interpretation of the text) and caught up to BLK 2 in the novel.

Monday, November 7, 2022

Lesson 37

Students had today's class to work on their "Dreamer's Rock" project - they also have most of tomorrow's block, but it will be due at the end of the class.

Wednesday, November 2, 2022

Lesson 34

There were only a few students in class today- They worked on the online assignment for Careers, as they did not go to a workplace.

Students need to have the quotes (outlined in yesterday's lesson) ready for tomorrow's class.

Lesson 33

Today students either read (Blk 2) or the class had a seating change (Blk 3).

We then finished reading the play - student readers did an excellent job.

Students handed in their Reading Log charts from two classes ago.

HMWRK - Students need to find two quotations (with page numbers) which describe each of the three time periods addressed in the play (so 6 quotations total) which connect SETTING and a big idea from the play. (Just setting is fine for now) The goal is that these quotes illustrate illustrate the importance of Dreamer's Rock and the surrounding area of Manitoulin to the people.

Lesson K

Students shared some truly remarkable odes today - I was so proud of the work they did! Students  had the rest of the block to either begin ...
